Gestural Audio Softwear Instruments
نویسندگان
چکیده
We demonstrate fabric and body-based gestural control of model-based sound synthesis for live musical expression by non-expert as well as trained performers. These softwear instruments are based on customized TinyOS wireless sensor platoforms and our realtime MSP synthesis methods. Our softwear instruments allow freehand, continuous and improvised gesture, and map such continuous gesture to realtime control of pseudo-physical, model-based sound synthesis instruments. We explore variation between “natural” sound and sound with artifice for expressive applications in experimental performance and in audio play.

Active Acoustic Instruments for Electronic Chamber Music
This paper presents an ongoing project for augmenting acoustic instruments with active acoustics. Active acoustics are defined as audio-rate vibration driven into the instruments physical structure, inducing air-borne sound output. The instrument’s acoustic sound is thus doubled by an electronic soundscape radiating from the same source. The article is centered on a case study on two guitars, o...
متن کاملUnsounding Objects: Audio Feature Extraction for the Control of Sound Synthesis
This paper presents results from the development of a digital musical instrument which uses audio feature extraction for the control of sound synthesis. Our implementation utilizes multi-band audio analysis to generate control signals. This technique is well-suited to instruments for which the gestural interface is intentionally weakly defined. We present a percussion instrument utilizing this ...
متن کاملSurfaceMusic: Mapping Virtual Touch-based Instruments to Physical Models
In this paper we discuss SurfaceMusic, a tabletop music system in which touch gestures are mapped to physical models of instruments. With physical models, parametric control over the sound allows for a more natural interaction between gesture and sound. We discuss the design and implementation of a simple gestural interface for interacting with virtual instruments and a messaging system that co...
متن کاملThe [hid] toolkit: a unified framework for instrument design
The [hid] toolkit is a set of software objects for designing computer-based gestural instruments. All too frequently, computer-based performers are tied to the keyboard-mousemonitor model, narrowly constraining the range of possible gestures. A multitude of gestural input devices are readily available, making it easy to utilize a broader range of gestures. Human Interface Devices (HIDs) such as...
متن کاملAn Introduction to Some Recent Developments in Gestural Musical Instruments
Humans have been making music for millennia, yet the processes of developing existent musical instruments and even inventing new ones are ongoing as technology advances and tastes change. Many recent developments have been made in a category of instruments I have chosen to refer to as "gestural instruments"mainly electronic instruments which can map the performer's gesture to musical output in ...
